Heart for Art

Heart for Art is a creative arts group run by CrossReach, supporting people living with dementia across Scotland. Established in 2012, Heart for Art has been bringing joy, confidence, and connection to people affected by dementia for over a decade through inclusive, dementia-friendly creative sessions.

At Broomhill Hyndland Parish Church, Heart for Art meets fortnightly on Thursday afternoons in a relaxed and supportive environment. Sessions are led by experienced art tutors and are open to anyone living with dementia, regardless of artistic experience. Whether participants have painted for years or are picking up a pencil for the first time, everyone is encouraged to take part at their own pace.

Research — and our own experience — shows that creative activity can stimulate conversation, improve concentration, and support memory retention. With pencil or paintbrush in hand, participants often find new ways to express themselves and communicate. In the company of others with lived experience of dementia, artists discover friendship, purpose, and acceptance — and as confidence grows, so too do smiles.

Support for Families and Carers

Heart for Art is designed to support families and carers as well as participants. Sessions provide an activity that carers can enjoy alongside someone living with dementia, while also offering the opportunity to take a short break or connect with others in similar situations. A CrossReach Dementia Ambassador is present at every session, offering advice, reassurance, and practical support.

Breaking Down Barriers Through Art

Whenever possible, artwork created through Heart for Art is exhibited publicly, helping to challenge stigma and highlight the creativity and capability of people living with dementia. These exhibitions play an important role in breaking down barriers and changing perceptions.

Anyone living with dementia is warmly welcome to attend Heart for Art. No previous experience of art is needed — just an openness to creativity, companionship, and connection.
